What is Amber?

Amber is often mistaken for a semi-precious stone, but it is actually a hardened plant fossil resin from a species of tree, the coniferous Pinus succinifera. The fossilization process can last up to 50 million years and It occurs mainly in the form of a drop or tubercle, with a homogeneous or conoidal structure.

Its original name from Arabic means "what floats in the sea" , since it floats on salt water. Large reserves of amber lie at the bottom of the Baltic Sea, and after major storms, when the waves have stirred up the bottom, it can be found on beaches and on the surface of shallow waters.

It is a stone sensitive to acids, bleach, gasoline, alcohol and perfumes. It can be lit with a match and the smoke released smells of incense, this is one of the easiest ways to check its originality.
